Best places in Spain to see the 2027 eclipse

Totality crosses the southern tip of Spain mid-morning on Monday, August 2, 2027, around 10:45 CEST, with the sun about 38° high in the morning sky. The best spots are around the Strait of Gibraltar, with up to 4 minutes 37 seconds of totality in Tarifa — and nearly 4 minutes 48 seconds across the water in Ceuta.

Inside the path

The northern edge of totality runs roughly from Sanlúcar de Barrameda past Arcos and Antequera to just south of Almería. Everything south of that line sees totality; the further south, the longer it lasts.

The Strait: Tarifa, Algeciras and Gibraltar

The centre line passes just south of Spain, through the Strait itself, so the coast from Zahara de los Atunes to La Línea gets 4 to 4½ minutes. Tarifa, at Europe's southern tip, has the longest totality on the Spanish mainland. Gibraltar has almost as much, plus hotels and an airport. The catch is wind and sea fog: the Strait is famous for both, so have a fallback a little inland.

Ceuta and Melilla

Spain's two North African cities are both deep inside the path. Ceuta, about an hour by ferry from Algeciras, sits closest to the centre line and has 4 min 47 s — the most anywhere in Spain. Melilla, further east, has 4 min 34 s.

Costa de la Luz

The Atlantic coast from Cádiz to Zahara is quieter than the Costa del Sol and has long beaches facing the right way. Totality ranges from under 3 minutes in Cádiz to over 4 minutes at Barbate and Zahara. Vejer and Conil are good bases.

Costa del Sol

Marbella, Estepona and Fuengirola get just over 3 minutes and have the most hotels; Málaga, near the edge of the path, gets under 2. If you stay in Málaga or Torremolinos, drive south-west towards Estepona on the morning of the eclipse for an extra minute or more.

Just outside: Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Almería

These cities see a deep partial eclipse but no totality — the sky stays bright. From each, drive south on the morning of the eclipse, or better, stay on the coast.

“Sun covered” is the eclipse magnitude, the fraction of the sun's diameter covered at maximum. Centre-line distances are to the nearest point on the centre line, which may be at sea; the map shows the best spot on land.
